Establishment and Inauguration

A place of worship in South Chennai was a long cherished dream and prayer of Jacobite Christians staying in and around South Chennai. Though some attempts were made, but futile. However, after the formation of Diocese of Mylapore under the dynamic leadership of H.G. Issac Mor Ostatheos, the search for a place of worship in South Chennai got a fillip. Thirumeni during his travel through the OMR. spotted YMCA Perungudi and after a year long correspondence, the YMCA authorities granted permission to conduct worship service on Sundays in their badminton court.

A small group of family members supported by a small team of dynamic and energetic youth toiled day and night under the leadership Rev Fr Johns Koshy to convert the badminton court to a traditional Church temporarily. They worked as a team, moved around and gathered items required for conducting the Holy Service within a short period..

The inaugural Holy Mass was celebrated on Sunday, 27th November 2011 by the diocesan bishop H.G. Issac Mor Osthatheos. The Kalpana of our shreshta bava H.B. Baselios Thomas I was read during the Service christening the church in the name St. Gregorios, the great saint of Malankara. After the Holy Mass a meeting was arranged in which Achens from our sister parishes along with many worshipers and diocesan representatives participated. Thirumeni appointed Rev Fr Johns Koshy as the first Vicar of the Church.

St. Gregorios Jacobite Syrian Society

It is our long cherished prayer to have Church in our own premises and with this idea it was decided to form a society in the name of “ST. GREGORIOS JACOBITE SYRIAN SOCIETY, CHENNAI”. With the kind approval of Diocesan Bishop, the document for the registration of the society was submitted in the sub-registrar office, Saidapet, Chennai and got registered under TN Societies Registration Act, 1975 in July 2013 with registration No. 207/2013. Currently, our Church is the only institution managed by this Society and the managing committee of the Church is same as that of the Society.
